摘要#
Bun 的創作者。他在 2021 年 4 月 16 日寫下第一行 Zig 程式碼;讀過 Hacker News 上的單頁語言參考資料後,便押注這門語言,並在一年內獨自打造 Bun 的初始版本。當時尚無 LLM,他住在「奧克蘭一間狹小的公寓」裡。Bun 於 2025 年 12 月被 Anthropic 收購;Sumner 和 Bun 團隊如今都在該公司工作。
他在 2026 年 7 月發表的文章 Rewriting Bun in Rust,是 wiki 中對大型動態工作流程專案最具方法細節的實務記錄,也是更正 Boris Cherny 對同一專案二手轉述版本的來源。
值得延續的立場#
- 語言選擇不再是單向決定。「直到最近,對像 Bun 這樣的專案來說,程式語言的選擇都是單向決定。」整篇文章的核心主張不是 Rust 比 Zig 好,而是切換成本降低了。他謹慎地沒有歸咎於 Zig:「其他 Zig 使用者沒有我們遇到的那些 bug……我永遠心懷感激。」
- 編譯器錯誤勝過風格指南。 重寫的動機是回饋迴路,而非效能:風格指南(TigerStyle、Google 長達 31,000 字的 C++ 指南)仰賴程式碼審查盡力落實;安全的 Rust 則能把相同規則變成編譯錯誤。
- 修正流程,而非程式碼。 他明確表示,面對每一次工作流程失敗,都要「修正產生程式碼的流程,而不是手動修正程式碼」。這項專案每次出現錯誤開端,最後都是透過編輯工作流程提示來收尾。
- 審查提升到更高層次。 他沒有讀完一百萬行程式碼。他檢視的是對抗式審查代理程式是否抓到真實的 Zig/Rust 差異,並搭配手動並排抽樣(審查作為控制點)。
- 結語主張。「一位工程師今天能做的事,比一年前多得多」——這番話是針對明確提出的反事實情境:三位工程師投入一年;而實際可行的另一種選擇則是什麼也不做。
證據權重#
Sumner 在此報告的所有內容都是 case-study,並明確揭露了自己的身分:他是 Anthropic 員工,使用尚未正式推出的 Claude Fable 5 和 Claude Code,描述自己團隊的專案。這份記錄罕見地坦承失敗(代理程式互相執行 git reset、以空殼實作鑽漏洞、磁碟空間耗盡,以及上線 19 個回歸問題),因此很有參考價值;但它是建置過程紀錄,沒有對照組,並非測量結果。
針對同一專案的首篇外部稽核(Tom Lockwood,2026-07-27)特別為他撇清責任:「Bun 團隊從未做過那種宣稱。」 稽核的目標是二手轉述的「這次重寫花了 $165k」;Sumner 的文章並未如此宣稱,甚至還指出這個說法的問題,因為他明確表示,合併到 main 並不代表推出了有版本號的正式版本。稽核指出,這篇文章未劃清一條會計界線:~$165k 是讓測試轉綠所花的 token 費用;CI、員工工時和合併後的後續工作都不在其中,而「三位工程師投入一年」的反事實估算則包含了完整成本。參見動態工作流程:代理程式的代數。
